Formerly known as Cherry, New York’s rock-meets-electronica duo Ratatat feature multi-instrumentalist/programmer Evan Mast and guitarist Mike Stroud. Mast is also the brains behind the pretty laptop pop of E*vax, and with his brother E*Rock he runs the indie electronic label Audio Dregs. Between these duties (and Mast’s job as a graphic designer), the duo found time to work on their collaboration. Mast worked beats and song ideas in his bedroom studio, which he gave to Stroud to develop while the guitarist was on the road. Though Mast and Stroud began working together in 2001, things began to really come together for the pair in 2003: in May, while they were still called Cherry, they played their first gig; by September they changed their name to Ratatat; and that November they issued their first single on Audio Dregs, which had a limited run of 1,100 copies. Dates with Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and Battles followed, and Ratatat signed to XL Records. The duo’s self-titled debut album arrived in spring 2004, coinciding with another round of dates with bands including !!!,Electrelane, and Tortoise. Classics appeared in 2006, followed by a self-released remix album. Ratatat then took a different approach to their third full-length effort, emphasizing live percussion and keyboards while toning down their familiar mix of programmed beats and guitars. Recorded in several short weeks, LP3 was released in July 2008, followed by LP4, released just shy of two years later in 2010. Ratatat contributed two songs to the debut album by Kid Cudi entitled Man on the Moon: The End of Day.. Also in August 2011, Ratatat was featured in the song “Red Alert” on CSS’s new album La Liberación.

Theophilus London - GG$

image

Theophilus London is an alternative rap artist from Brooklyn, NY, whose genre-bending approach draws from a range of styles, from soul-pop and post-punk to electro and contemporary R&B.Citing influences that include Michael Jackson and Prince as well as Kraftwerk and the Smiths. His debut EP Lovers Holiday, released on Warner Bros. Records on February 7, 2011, features TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, Sara Quin from Tegan and Sara, Glasser, and Solange Knowles. His full-length debut album Timez Are Weird These Days, mixed by noted producer Dan Carey, was released by Warner Brothers on July 19, 2011.

Theo’s style it’s more like a direct ode to the past, 96% vintage and 4% new school . He likes layers– lots of em, swanky college or NBA snap-backs (90s style), blazers, button ups, jean outerwear, corduroys, classic frames (he usually sports brown tortoise shell by Oliver Peoples, clubmasters, or classic clear wayfarers), and whichever kicks complete his raw vintage 70s/90s look. Mr.London’s style is actually reminiscent of past local urban gentleman Curran Swint.

SBTRKT

image

SBTRKT is Aaron Jerome, is a musician/producer. He allows the music to speak for itself. He performs behind a mask every time he plays out. He began his career as a DJ in the east London club “Plastic People”..

SBTRKT sound: The main thing are the synths, arrangement and syncopation. I tend to play around with chords or pads first, and then start applying some drums to it. Even though I guess I write ‘bass music’ I tend to add bass in last; rhythm and arrangement are most important for me. A lot of people seem to mention ‘2 step’ alongside my name guess it’s just because of the syncopation that genre entailed.

SBTRKT has remixed songs by artists such as MIA, Radiohead, Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, Mark Ronson and Underworld, and has released singles, EPs, and a self-titled album. His music is a mixture of two-step, UK funky, dubstep, US RnB and Chicago house..

J. Cole - Cole World

image

Jermaine Lamarr Cole
(born January 28, 1985), is a German born American rapper, singer and record producer. In an era saturated with upstart MCs all vying for the coveted status of “next big thing”,J.Cole is a refreshing exception to the quick route for fame and success. The first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label, Cole made himself notable through a scholarly approach to the game – no small feat considering his Magna Cum Laude distinction upon graduating from St. John’s University.

If his sudden christening by JAY-Z shocked the haters, their doubts were quickly refuted when J. Cole dropped his recent mixtape The Warm Up, as well as a coveted guest verse on JAY-Z’s Blueprint 3 with “A Star is Born”. Soulful and strong, J. Cole’s lyrics touch on everything from his upbringing in North Carolina to the poverty and hopelessness that affect his community. The mixtape encapsulates not just who J. Cole is as a rapper, but who he is as an artist and a person.

Taking from his favorite artists a love for powerful storytelling with an intense inner-strength, J. Cole advanced to writing his own lyrics at 15, soon amassing stacks of notebooks filled with rhymes and observations. Without a DJ or producer to provide a beat, he industriously started creating his own using a beat machine given as a present by his mother. From then on J. Cole was constantly creating new music and lyrics leading to his current and flow.

TYGA

Michael Nguyen-Stevenson (born November 19, 1989),better known by his stage name Tyga, is an American rapper  struggling to rise above the negativity that surrounded him. Born and raised in the infamous Compton, CA armed with nothing but an amateur mixtape and hunger, he built solid local buzz through impressive live shows and an online hustle. Still, a kid with lofty dreams wondered if he’d ever catch that “big break”.Signed to Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Universal Motown Records. He first received recognition with his debut single “Coconut Juice”. He was nominated for a Grammy, with Chris Brown for “Deuces”, for the 2011 Grammy’s. After recording a mixtape and promoting it around the city, Tyga ran into Cody Ulm and Scott Bolinger, in the Flight Club L.A. sneaker shop. Their conversation went from shoes to rappers, and as Cody and Scott’s group went from unknowns to MTV stars, he would always remember that talk and his unique style. Cody and Scott signed Tyga to his Bad Squad label and then invited him along when the punk-pop group Fall Out Boy came calling. Cody, Scott and Tyga would appear on the remix to Fall Out Boy’s “Arms Race,” which also featured Kanye West,Paul Wall, Skinhead Rob, Lupe Fiasco, and Lil Wayne. When the remix became a hit, Tyga found himself performing the track on MTV’s Video Music Awards in 2007. He soon entered the studio to do some guest shots for his new friend Lil Wayne before shifting the focus to his solo career. His first single became the hooky “Coconut booty,” a S*A*M & Sluggo production that borrowed a bit of Harry Nilsson’s hit “Coconut.” As the club track was climbing the charts in the spring of 2008, Tyga was hard at work on his debut album, No Introduction, which was officially released on June 2008. REKS

image

Born and raised in Lawrence, MA, street lyricist Corey Isiah Christie, better known as just Reks, started out as a breakdancer in his teens and was part of a local B-boy crew called Funk Town Connection. By the time he entered college at University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Reks had built a reputation for himself in the local Boston rap scene, but then eventually quit school to begin recording for Brick Records. A few 12” singles, “I Could Have Done More” and “Fearless,” arrived first in early 2001, before Brick issued his debut LP, Along Came the Chosen, later that year. A cult favorite in Beantown rap circles, the album earned Reks nominations for Hip-Hop Album and Artist of the Year by the Boston Music Awards. Even with all the accolades as well as press features running in Source, XXL, Vibe, and URB, Reks’ career didn’t ascend to the national stage. In fact, he self-released his second album, Rekless (2003), and had no distribution other than from the trunk of his car. In 2004, he turned to the mixtape circuit, releasing Happy Holidays (2005) and the Rash Music series, the latter of which was under his new group, M Diesel (which included Lucky Dice and Chi Knox). In this time period, he also hooked up with fellow Lawrence, MA, native and national mixtape guru Statik Selektah, eventually signing on to the DJ’s ShowOff Records imprint. Reks made several appearances on Selektah’s Spell My Name Right (2007) LP as well as on material by the DJ’s up-and-coming protégéTermanology. Executive produced by Selektah, Reks’ ShowOff debut, Grey Hairs, arrived in 2008.
